The Caspian Sea and Most Beautiful Beaches in Azerbaijan
From water sports to romantic afternoons to lively evenings,
the sandy Caspian beaches around Baku are great places to escape the hustle and
bustle of the city.
Caspian Sea and Beaches
The shores of the Caspian Sea are full of excellent beach
clubs, from the resorts of the Absheron peninsula easily accessible from Baku
to the water sports center of Shuraabad. There you will find the perfect
conditions to learn kitesurfing on the scenic lagoon and once you have mastered
the basics you can take your board out into the Caspian Sea. Both professionals
and amateurs can take windsurfing sessions on some beaches in Baku. However, if
you are looking for tranquility and romance, head to less crowded beaches such
as Amburan, Bilgah, Crescent, Dalga, Lankaran, Mardakan, Nardaran, Novkhani,
Nabran, Pirshagi, and Zagulba.
Although Azerbaijan isn't known for its beach vacations, a
selection of sandy spots on the Caspian Sea can provide you with a bit of fun
in the sun on your travels here.
The water around Baku is known to be filled with oil rigs
and industrial pipes, so you'll have to travel a bit further from the capital
to find a place to lay your towel. Here are some of our favorite options for a
day at the beach in Azerbaijan.
Beach in Azerbaijan
Amburan Beach Club
Daybeds and sprawling lounge chairs lining the sand are the
order of the day at Amburan Beach Club. This private slice of Baku beach comes
with a fee, but it's worth it for the pristine sand and range of amenities.
There are several beach bars and a restaurant – and a huge pool is an option if
you like your water calm and a bit less saline.
Bilgah Beach
To the north of the Baku Peninsula, Bilgah Beach is
dominated by the rocket-like Bilgah Beach Hotel. The golden sands are a popular
place for families to gather on weekends to escape the city and spend the day
paddling in the sea. A collection of beachside cafes provide some food, and
there are also changing rooms.
Crescent Beach
In the Baku suburb of Shikh, Crescent Beach is a
family-friendly spot by the Caspian Sea. The slow descent into the sea makes it
a safe place to paddle - and a play park and plenty of dining options make it a
popular place for families. The silhouette of an oil rig looms in the distance,
which may be a stain on the landscape for some - but there's a modern beauty to
floating there in the sea.
Dalga Beach
On the Absheron Peninsula, Dalga Beach is one of the
cleanest beaches near Baku. Terra-cotta sand slides into the Caspian Sea, and
there are plenty of changing huts, umbrellas, and places to lay your towel. It
is also home to Azerbaijan's largest water park, and you can try out all types
of water sports, from parasailing to banana boating.
Lankaran Beach
In southern Azerbaijan, Lankaran is another resort -
although it is a little busier here. The beach is all pebble, made for morning
strolls rather than an all-day event. The ancient city itself is a lovely place
to visit if only to try the local lemons and tea - or perhaps tea with a slice
of lemon - and explore the local museums. For a more surreal experience, head
south to Yanar Bulag Fire Spring to watch the water ignite.
Mardakan Beach
Welcome to our public beach in Mardakan! There you will
enjoy clear sand, blue sea, clean air - everything human nature needs, but for
free! Not far from the sea there are cafes, where you can eat right by the sea,
and cheap! Isn't that a real thrill? There is "Dalga" beach next to
the free public beach. It's quite expensive, but it's a very luxurious place.
Nardaran Beaches
North of Baku, the suburb of Nardaran has a Capsian Sea
beach ideal for a day trip from the city. Palm-leaf umbrellas dot the sand,
providing some shade, and outdoor freshwater showers for cooling off after a
dip in the sea. At SeaZone Beach, you'll find lounge chairs that can be hired
and a few fresh seafood restaurants, where the catch of the day is served
street food style on wooden benches.
Novkhani Beach
There's a reason Novkhani Beach has attracted a handful of
resort hotels and water parks to its shores - it's one of the best beaches on
the Absheron Peninsula. Far from the oil rigs and industrial pipelines of
central Baku, it's a long stretch of sand where seafood restaurants have set up
shop and you'll see nothing but water for miles. There are also plenty of
facilities here, like changing cabins, outdoor showers, and water sports
vendors galore.
Nabran Beach
In the north of Azerbaijan, Nabran is a small seaside resort
that attracts locals to spend the weekend by the sea. The Caspian Sea is
cleaner here than around Baku and the Absheron peninsula, c This is your chance
to fully immerse yourself in the sea. A few rustic-style beach clubs have been
set up on the sand, providing a place to stretch out on a lounge chair and have
a drink.
