Blast in Pakistan: At least seven dead in Peshawar Madrassa attack
At least seven people have died and more than fifty injured after an explosion during a class at a religious school in Peshawar, Pakistan, local police said.
Children of different age groups are among the dead, an officer
at the scene told the News Channels.
No group has yet claimed responsibility. An investigation
has been opened.
The town of Peshawar, near the Afghan border, has seen some
of the worst violence during the Taliban insurgency in recent years.
Six years ago, armed men stormed a military school in the
city, killing more than 150 people, including many children.
However, the number of attacks has dropped significantly in
recent years.
What happened there?
The explosion took place around 8:30 AM. local time (03:30
GMT), police told the News Channels.
About 60 people were said to have been in the class of the
religious school, known as the madrassa.
An eyewitness told police he saw a man enter the building
with a bag of explosives shortly before the explosion.
Pictures of the interior of the room show significant
damage.
Deputy Inspector General of Police (AIG) Shafqat Malik told Pakistani newspaper Express Tribune that 5 kg (11 LBS) of explosives were used in the attack.
Hospital officials told Reuters news agency they had
received dozens of injured people, many of whom were burned.
The AFP news agency quoted police as saying two teachers
were among the injured.
