Cheap Flight Deals, Hotels, and Cruises for Traveling Asia

The Asian continent (at least a large part of it) is back. Similarly, hotel, cruise, tour, and vacation deals are available

Cheap Flight Deals, Hotels, and Cruises for Traveling Asia

International airfares aside, the region that has long been a value lover's paradise will once again offer a range of tantalizing bargains.

The Asian travel pause at Kensington Tours, where monthly sales figures recently rose 80% from the same period in 2019, is officially over. Travelers visit Thailand despite the rainy season in autumn. They book temple stays in South Korea. They are leaving for India at the last minute.

"Vietnam is absolutely bananas," said Jessica Vandermey, sales manager at Kensington Tours. "With a handful of people, I get amazing reviews at Angkor Wat against the masses."

After an expensive break in travel that in some places lasted more than two years, much of Asia is back. As China remains closed to tourism and Japan refines its policy towards independent travelers, hotels and tour operators are seeing strong growth. Intrepid Travel said it was sending as many Americans to Asia as it did in 2019. At Minor International, a Thailand-based hospitality company that runs Anantara, Avani, NH, and other popular hotel brands in the region, bookings have already doubled the 2021 totals.

Priceline chief executive Brett Keller said consumers are seeking hotels in Asia in greater numbers every year. "Consumers are moving beyond revenge travel and integrating travel back into their daily lives," Keller said. As a result of this mindset, they have been taking long-haul international trips again, instead of limiting themselves to near-border trips for the past two years.

As in the rest of the world, the pandemic has changed the landscape of travel in Asia. The lowest prices on flights to and from the region are rare. But the place that has always been a value lovers deliverance will offer travelers even cheaper prices on the ground for things like hotels and perhaps fewer crowds at iconic attractions.

More expensive flights

The first hurdle to traveling to Asia – getting there – may be the costliest, at least compared to the great fares available before 2020. Priceline tracks round-trip tickets worldwide to the region at 53% more expensive this year compared to 2019, when the average price was around $731.

China's shutdown blocked flights that were exerting some of the biggest competitive forces on fares in Asia. Beijing, Shanghai, Taipei, and Taipei are among the top business destinations in the world that are closed or restricted for tourists.

According to aviation analysis company Cirium, scheduled flights between the United States and Asia fell by 54% between August 2019 and August 2022. United Airlines, for example, flew about 1,100 flights in August 2019 but had fallen to 482 in August 2022, according to the company.

The frequency of business-oriented flights "had been such a downward force on airfares," said Scott Keyes, the founder of Scott's Cheap Flights, a subscription service that finds great airfares. “Cheap flights to Beijing were being bought so many times by people who wanted to go to Hanoi or Bali. Without these flights in service, you don't see the same number of cheap fares.

He estimated that a bargain today would be 30-40% more expensive than in 2019. Recently, the service announced $775 round-trip tickets to South Korea from the east coast of the United States. United. In 2019, a comparable rate could have been as low as $550.

“As long as major economies don't reopen in a great deal of depth, we will continue to see a slump,” said Keyes.

Selling at less than $1,100 round-trip, the cheapest transpacific fares searched on Priceline were airports in Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. The price for round-trip New York-Bangkok flights recently started at about $830 on Priceline.

Once you arrive in an Asian capital, low-cost regional carriers can offer inexpensive ways to get around. A recent one-way ticket from Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok on Malaysia-based AirAsia in early October, for example, was priced at $62 before extras such as seat assignments.

Other low-cost carriers in the region include India-based IndiGo and Australia-based Jetstar, which recently experienced operational issues, stranding thousands of Australian travelers in Bali last month.

As with any low-cost airline, foreign or domestic, check the cancellation policy, as well as the inclusions - seat assignments, food, and checked baggage, are usually extra - to make sure it is the best offer compared to other competitors in the region.

Field offers

In the field, other expenses may be less. According to Priceline, average hotel rates are 7% cheaper than in 2019, when the average rate was $120 a night. In Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Thailand, India, Vietnam, and the Philippines, there is no shortage of affordable hotels under $100 a night, with the best deals being found in Varanasi, India; Kuchina, Malaysia; Da Nang, Vietnam, Iloilo, Philippines; and Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

An offer at FCC Angkor by Avani in Siem Reap, Cambodia, includes airport pick-up, tuk-tuk transport, and a guided tour of the Angkor Wat temples, breakfast, and lunch or dinner for two and a couples spa treatment from $129 per night.

The popularity of Japan continues to grow and group tour operators are scrambling to meet the demand. EF Go Ahead Tours offers a 14-day trip to Japan that starts at around $5,300.

Some travel advisers offer South Korea as a substitute with comparable culture and culinary intrigue but at a lower cost of living. An eight-day G Adventures trip to South Korea, including visits to Seoul, UNESCO-listed parks and temples, and the seaside town of Busan, starts at $2,249.

Independent travelers to South Korea will find a temple stay at a mountain monastery in Seoul starting at around $50 a night, including Buddhist rituals and meals from the cultural tour organization Templestay.

Future cruises on sale

Large ship cruises have always been a cost-effective way to visit many destinations. But the checkerboard of closures and Covid regulations in Asia are making it harder for shipping companies to navigate as they have in the past.

As a result, many have postponed departures to the region until spring and even fall 2023. The pandemic reached the region before Celebrity Cruises operated two ships. He is now targeting September 2023 to make his comeback.

To fill some of these ships departing in the future, several cruise lines are offering deals on the 2023 and 2024 itineraries.

In late September, Princess Cruises was offering a five-day cruise to South Korea and Japan next June starting at $497 per person, visiting Tokyo, Kobe, and Kagoshima in Japan and Jeju Island in South Korea. To reserve it, the line requires a refundable deposit of $100.
