The Saudi Arabian government has launched a high-speed train to help Umrah pilgrims reduce the travel time and guarantee a hassle-free pilgrimage.

Without motor-powered transport, traveling from Jeddah to Medina to Makkah  (home to one of Islam’s holiest sites) made for a back-breaking 10-day trip. The new high-speed train service makes it possible for pilgrims to travel between the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah in just 2 hours and 20 minutes.

The Haramain Express, which advances at a top speed of over 300 kph, is part of the Kingdom’s integrated transport network. Serving Hajj and Umrah pilgrims, devotees and civilians alike, the 453 km long inter-city rail transport system project in Saudi Arabia represents an important expansion of the railway network.

The train can board over 400 passengers, divided between business and economy classes. The tickets are expected to be priced between SR40 and SR150 ($10.60 - $40). The motorcade will also make stops at Jeddah and King Abdullah Economic City.
