Independence Day: Indian Festivals 2022
Where: India
Meaning: India's Independence Day is celebrated on August 15
every year to commemorate the liberation of India from the rule of the British
Raj in 1947. In addition to being a national holiday, it is an annual
celebration.
Things to do: People hoist the national flag, wear colors
signifying the tricolor, and participate in many cultural programs and parades
to celebrate the day.
Independence Day Facts: The flag was raised at Lahori Gate
of the Red Fort by Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of independent
India, and Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi fasted in Calcutta on August 15, 1947.
This day is recognized as the national pride and honor of
our country, with the following prime ministers raising the flag and addressing
the nation from Red Fort each year.
Krishna Janmasthami: Indian Festivals 2022
When: This popular festival of India dates on 19th August,
Friday in 2022.
Where: This festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm all
over India. But the celebrations in Mathura and Vrindavan are somewhat special.
Meaning: It is believed that Lord Krishna was born on this
day.
Things to do: People fast on this day, and festivities begin
at midnight. Devotional songs are also sung. As part of the ritual, baby
Krishna statues are washed and placed for worship. People then break their fast
and share food and sweets. On this day, the Dahi handi Contest was also
organized.
Ganesh Chaturthi: Indian Festivals 2022
Where: This festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm all
over India. But celebrations in Maharashtra are somewhat special.
Meaning: Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated to mark the birth of
Lord Ganesha.
Things to do: This is a 10-day festival that starts weeks
before Ganesh Chaturthi, with people making clay idols of Lord Ganesha and
painting them. On the tenth day, the statue of Lord Ganesha is immersed in
water, known as Ganpati Visarjan. People sing Ganapati Bappa Morya, paying
homage to him.
Onam: Indian Festivals 2022
When: Onam is one of the most popular festivals in India
(south) and will take place on Thursday 8th September 2022. The festival begins
on the day called Atham and ends on the tenth day called Thiru Onam or
Thiruvonam.
Where: The festival of Onam is celebrated throughout the
state of Kerala.
Meaning: The Onam festival has its roots in mythology. Once
upon a time, there was a generous and virtuous ruler, Mahabali, who ruled
Kerala. Although he is an asura - the enemy of the devas. So the devas sent
Lord Vishnu in the disguise of Vamana (a dwarf). Vamana asked Mahabali for one
meter of soil as an offering.
And at the time of measuring the three feet of earth, Vamana
became so huge that he measured all the worlds in two steps. Since he had
nowhere else to place his third step, Mahabali asked Vamana to place it on him.
Vamana was pleased with the king's generosity and blessed Mahabali before he
was sent to the lower world. He granted her permission to visit people once a
year. And Mahabali's visit is celebrated as Onam.
Things to do: People buy and wear new clothes, known as
Onakkodi, lamps are beautifully decorated, and people also engage in various
games and dances during and after Thiruvonam.
Gandhi Jayanti: Indian Festivals 2022
When: Gandhi Ji was born on 2nd October.
Where: Gandhi Jayanti is observed throughout India.
Meaning: Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2nd in Gujarat,
Porbandar.

Gandhi, also known as Mahatma Gandhi, was a major contributor to the Indian
independence movement. Not only did Gandhi simply contribute to India's freedom
struggle, but he also stood up to bring change in society. He believed in the
path of "Ahimsa" and therefore his birthday is celebrated to remember
his principle of non-violence and to ensure peace, and tolerance in the nation.
Mahatma Gandhi is India's greatest and most famous personality and for his
contributions to India's independence struggle, he has earned the title of
"Father of the Nation".
Navratri: Indian Festivals 2022
When: This series of holy and popular festivals of India
falls on the month of October, with Dussehra on the 5th of October.
Where: Throughout India
Meaning: It is held in honor of the divine feminine.
Things to do: The festival lasts for nine days and nine
nights and is accompanied by dancing, music, sweets, and worship of the most
powerful goddess. The festival ends on the 10th day with Dussehra (also known
as Vijayadashami).
A popular ritual of this festival is Kanya Puja, which takes
place on the eighth or ninth day. In this ritual, nine maidens are dressed as
the nine goddesses representing feminine power. They are worshiped with foot
washing and given offerings such as food and clothing.
Dussehra is a time to celebrate the triumphs of good over
evil. It is associated with Rama's victory over Ravana, from the Ramayana. In
North India, the Ram Lila is the highlight of the festival.
Diwali: Indian Festivals 2022
When: This popular Indian festival will take place on
Monday, October 24, 2022.
Where: Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is celebrated with
great enthusiasm across India.
Meaning: The celebration of Diwali marks the return of Lord
Ram to Ayodha after 14 years of exile.
Things to do: Traditionally this was five long days. The
darkest night is centered on the night of Diwali, the night of the new moon -
the end of the month of Ashvin and the beginning of the month of Kartika.

Day 2 – Naraka Chaturdashi, Chhoti Diwali
Day 3 – Lakshmi Puja/Kali Puja
Day 4 – Govardhan Puja
Day 5 – Bhai Dooj/Vishwakarma Puja
People are cleaning their houses and decorating them
beautifully with lights and diyas. They wear new clothes, make sweets, and pray
for better days.
Bhai Dooj: Indian Festivals 2022
When: In 2022, Bhai Dooj falls on Wednesday, October 26.
Where: Throughout India
Meaning: It celebrates the loving relationship between
siblings.
Things to do: Siblings pray for each other's well-being and
long life on this special day. Continuing the ceremony in a traditional style,
the sisters perform the arti for their brother and apply a red tika to the
brother's forehead.
Guru Nanak Jayanti: Indian Festivals 2022
When: Guru Nanak Jayanti falls on the 8th of November, in 2022,
Tuesday.
Where: Throughout India; most popular in Punjab.
Meaning: It is recommended to celebrate the birth
anniversary of the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak Dev.
Things to do: The festivities start at Gurudwaras two days
before the day of Guru Nanak Jayanti. A constant 48-hour recitation of the Guru
Granth Sahib, called the Akhand Path, takes place. A day before Guru Nanak's
birthday, a parade called Nagarkirtan is coordinated. The parade is led by five
men, referred to as Panj Pyare, holding the three-sided Sikh flag, Nishan
Sahib.
About Guru Nanak Jayanti: Guru Nanak Jayanti, otherwise
known as Gurpurab, is the main celebration for devotees of the religion of
Sikhism. The celebration is celebrated on the arrival of Kartik Poornima, which
is the fifteenth lunar day in the long stretch of Kartik as represented by the
Hindu calendar, and usually falls in the period of November according to the
Gregorian calendar.
Christmas: Popular Festival of India
When: Christmas is a seasonal event that is typically
celebrated on December 25 each year.
Where: Throughout the World.
Meaning: Christmas is celebrated to remember the birth of
Jesus Christ, whom Christians believe to be the Son of God.
Things to do: This is when loved ones get together and
remember the good things they have. People, and especially children, also love
Christmas because it's the time when you give and receive gifts!
About Christmas: The name "Christmas" comes from
the Mass of Christ. Mass attendance is a place where Christians remember that
Jesus died for them and then came back to life. The 'Mass of Christ' service
was one that was permitted to take place after dusk (and before dawn the next
day), so individuals had it at midnight!
Christmas is currently celebrated by individuals all over
the world, if they are Christians.
